A root infection can be painful. It often happens when the nerve of the tooth is dying or is dead and the ensuing infection is spreading into the bone under the tooth. That is often the most painful kind of infection you can get. To properly treat this, the remaining dead nerve tissue has to be cleaned out properly and the area sealed up only after the infection is treated to make sure more infection does not happen again.
